Background

This is an exciting time in the development of UNICEF's fundraising potential in the Russian Federation. UNICEF began its fundraising efforts in Russia in 2005 and income has grown steadily over the years. Its fundraising activities will support local community-based projects in the Russian Federation as well as regional and global priorities. The Fundraising Unit works closely with the Program and Communications Unit and there are some remarkable opportunities that are awaiting to be strategically implemented.

Purpose of the Position

The Fundraising Officer provides management of the direction, planning, and execution of fundraising and development related activities for UNICEF in the Russian Federation.

This position is responsible for private sector income generation from individuals and corporations with emphasis on new corporate partners. The candidate will participate in launching of a new fundraising phase for UNICEF in Russia with the objective of rapidly growing the circle of donors and income. It reports to the Head of the Fundraising Unit. This is a fixed term position starting January 2012 for 2 years.

Typical Duties Include:

  • Direct short-term and long-range planning and budget development to support individual fundraising strategic business goals aligning with the Global Fundraising Strategy. Establish the performance goals, allocate resources, and assess relevant policies and guidelines for PSD activities. Develop an annual individual fundraising work plan appropriate to the Russian market, including a budget for expenses and projected revenues. Identify growth opportunity areas; manage the investment funds application process to support the exploitation of these opportunities. Upon approval of work plans, ensure proper control of their implementation and adherence to budget. Prepare and review progress reports. Ensure timeliness of monthly/quarterly reports. Monitors results to work plan and budgetary resources agreed and approved by PSFR/RT and Operations.
  • Implement approved individual fundraising strategies and campaigns that may include but not limited to donor acquisition activities, donor cultivation, donor retention, face-to-face, telephone fundraising, major donor and legacy campaigns. Test and develop private sector fundraising tools and techniques with an emphasis on pledge giving. Establish strong relationships with donors; develop donor care and retention strategies and activities. Identify and work with suitable direct marketing and advertising agencies, letter-shops, production houses and list brokers. Analyse and explore possibilities for implementation of mass appeals including telethons and direct response TV for private sector fundraising purposes as well as special events and major donors’ campaigns. In close cooperation with Communications, prepare various communication pieces aimed at private donors e.g. appeals, newsletters.
  • Support the corporate fundraising efforts by initiating new relationships with corporations, maintaining relationship with corporate donors and partners ensuring the fulfilment of contractual obligations on both sides. Liaise with the Programme section to provide for timely and accurate reporting to corporate donors. Communicate on-going needs of the partnerships to all internal stakeholders and follow up on the implementation. Ensure corporate donor satisfaction and thus retention/loyalty.
  • Adapts private sector fundraising documentation and materials available from PFP. Look for best practices and innovative fundraising tactics as well as establishing benchmarks for local fundraising activities. Keep track of competitive activities.
  • Implement, in cooperation with Communication Section, public awareness campaigns about UNICEF goals, strategies and programmes, and ensure that all information and advocacy materials include a call for funding support. Participate in business development events, including collaborating with Communication Officer to increase public awareness of UNICEF’s work.
  • Provide oversight for the encoding of all donors and the maintenance of database which is used for all fundraising activities. Carry out analysis to guide the DM strategies and plans. Monitor results of campaign, ensure proper tracking and reporting.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Economics or Advertising.   
  • At least five (5) years professional work experience in fundraising and resource mobilization targeting the private sector and/or in marketing, brand or product management in the private sector (preferably in a fast moving consumer goods company). Familiarity with private sector fundraising techniques and methodologies, such as direct mail, telephone marketing, face to face campaigns, pledges and special events would be a plus.  
  • Fluency in English and Russian

  • General knowledge of: Fundamentals for working in various media formats – print, audio, video, web etc., Computer systems/applications and network, including internet navigation, office applications, and specifically, interactive digital media, Knowledge of United Nations or other international organizations; Global human rights issues, specifically relating to children and women, UNICEF communication goals, policies, guidelines and strategies, UNICEF policies and strategy to address national and international issues, UNICEF emergency communication policies, goals, strategies.
