UN-HABITAT Executive Bureau in Moscow was founded in 1989.
Basic objective of the Bureau’s activity consists in coordination
and implementation of multi-lateral international cooperation of Russian organizations
with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) in the sphere
of sustainable human settlements development, urban planning, housing, international
expertise, improvement of legal framework and standards in the area of human
settlements.
The Bureau monitors the implementation of Programme of Cooperation,
signed between UN Human Settlements Programme and the State Committee of the
Russian Federation for Construction, Housing and Municipal Economy. Within this
activity, special attention is given to the complex problems of urban and rural
development in priority areas, emphasized by the Habitat Agenda, decisions
of the 25th special session of the United Nations General Assembly “Istanbul
+ 5”, as well as in the Declaration on Cities and Other Human Settlements
in the New Millennium and other recommendations, adopted during the sessions
of the UN-HABITAT Governing Council, including the resolutions on the countries
with transition economy.
Within the above mentioned Programme of Cooperation, the Bureau
is implementing a number of relevant UN-HABITAT projects in the Russian Federation.
Since 1999 UN-HABITAT Executive Bureau in Moscow publishes Russian
version of information bulletin “Habitat Debate”, issued by the Secretariate
of the UN Human Settlements Programme in English.
