Finalists named in Contest «UN and Human Rights in Russia»

Three Russian school children -Larisa Chichikina from Kaliningrad, Kristina Markova from Krasno-armeisk, Chuvashia, and Andrei Ruchkin from Kandalaksha, Murmansk Region - are all winners of the contest «The UN and Human Rights in Russia». The contest was conducted among Russian secondary school and university students by the United Nations Association of Russia (UNAR), within the UNDP Programme in support of Democracy, governance and participation (DGP).

The contest was held to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Each participant had to submit a type-written piece with his or her vision of the subject. Among university students the first three places in the contest entitled «Human Rights and Realisation of Sustainable development in Russia» were won consequently by Liya Korsakova (Samara), Muslim Tamazov (Nalchik) and Anna Astavina (Moscow). The winners have been awarded with free trips to New York which includes a visit to the UN Headquarters to familiarise themselves with the work of the organisation.

The contests jury, headed by the UNAR Chairman Prof. Anatoly Torkunov, have also awarded participants with special certificates.

Schoolchildren walk for peace

Last September many students and teachers of Moscow school No. 1509 participated in the Walk for Peace dedicated to the opening of the UN General Assembly. The walk took place along the paths of Gorky Park in the Russian capital. It was conducted to express support for the UN strive for permanent peace on Earth.

For over ten years school No. 1509, which is known as the Moscow English Grammar School, has been a collective member of the UN Association of Russia. It specialises in teaching English and French, while its curricular and extracurricular activities include general studies of UN structure, principles and activities. Its students and teachers participate in exchange programmes with American schools in the states of Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, as well as in Abingdon and Oxford, Great Britain.

In school No.1509 students playing "citizens" of imaginary State of Tarzania exhibit their "exotic" food items to a delegation of another similar "states".

Between December 9 to 11, 1998, the school will conduct UN model discussions devoted to the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The debate, organised under the aegis of the UNAR, will also cover other international issues such as nuclear disarmament and reform of the UN.
