UN Global Road Safety Week – #SlowDown to save lives
Speed contributes to around one-third of all fatal road traffic crashes in high-income countries, and up to half in low- and middle-income countries. In the WHO European Region, nearly 85 000 people died from road crashes in 2013; of these, 39% were vulnerable road users (pedestrians, bicyclists and motor cyclists). Road traffic injuries are the leading killer among children and young people aged 5–29 years.

Op-Ed by UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl
As Walid began telling his story, the room around us grew decidedly quite. When I met him a few days ago in Neirab camp, on the outskirts of battle-scarred Aleppo in Syria, this 11 year-old Palestine Refugee recalled how an aircraft had crashed inside the camp a couple of years ago, damaging several homes, including his own. Walid and his younger brother were injured. His mother was killed instantly, as were other neighbors and relatives.

"Depression: let’s talk" says WHO, as depression tops list of causes of ill health
Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. According to the latest estimates from WHO, more than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015. Lack of support for people with mental disorders, coupled with a fear of stigma, prevent many from accessing the treatment they need to live healthy, productive lives.

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major public health issue in the WHO European Region. Estimates suggest there were around 323 000 new TB cases and 32 000 deaths in the Region in 2015, mostly from eastern and central European countries (Fig. 1).
New TB cases have been falling at an average rate of 4.3% per year over the past five years, which is the fastest decline in the world. Nevertheless, new TB cases were almost eight times higher in high TB priority countries than in the rest of the Region.
